Darryl Strawberry Dishes on Lawrence Taylor and Ben Roethlisberger on "The CMI Show"

Darryl Strawberry tells The CMI Show: I hate to see Lawrence Taylor and Ben Roethlisberger drag themselves through this.

LOS ANGELES, May 12, 2010 - Former MLB slugger Darryl Strawberry, who has battled his own substance abuse and controversy, appeared on FOX Sports Radio's The CMI Show last weekend and discussed the recent arrest of NFL Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor and the off-field problems of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Below is an excerpt of host Chris Myers' conversation with Strawberry. To hear the interview, click here.

Chris Myers: "Darryl, whether you are a current player or a former player, recent news this week. I'm sure you heard. We don't know all the details. I have interviewed him many times. Lawrence Taylor, who is a Hall of Famer and probably the best player in the history, defensive player in the history of the NFL with an allegation of rape or paying money for an underage woman for sex. He's had some problems in the past with drugs. He has been in and out of jail. Supposedly he has been clean for many years. I know we will talk about that with you and how you battled that. What is your first reaction when you hear about news about somebody like this?"

Darryl Strawberry: "Sad. I mean just sad. Sad to the fact that, you know, we don't know the details. I don't know the details of it, but it's sad when those allegations come against you and those allegations will continue to come against you as long as you continue to put yourself in situations of that lifestyle. You have to learn to change your pattern of life and become a very disciplined person. You have to be able to become committed to your life and stop playing around in that atmosphere out there because it is what it is. It's not going to change. I think all these athletes, when you play and you don't play no more you think things are changing, but things are not changing, you know? You're still a person who's been a figure in the spotlight of spotlights and if you put yourself around situations, you know, these things are going to occur. That's the same thing for Big Ben. I love Big Ben for the Steelers, you know. You put yourself in these situations you just can't do this in this time and this day, you know? People are out there and things are gonna come against you. I hate to see these guys you know drag themselves through this, especially Lawrence Taylor. You know, he has been down this road you know for a long time and dealing with different issues and different things. You don't want to be a person where your name continues to come up for negative things. You want to be able revive your life and change it and do something good and do something for helping other people you know. God has given you a gift to play sports and be great and stuff and you can use your stardom in a different way instead of using it in a negative way."
