Friday, July 2nd 2010 Pete Carroll Joins FOX Sports Radio's "Petros & Money" to Talk About the USC Sanctions for the Last Time
LOS ANGELES, July 2, 2010 - Although he is no longer the head coach of the USC football team, Pete Carroll is still a wanted man in Los Angeles, and he called into FOX Sports Radio's Petros & Money on Thursday to talk about the massive NCAA sanctions that have been leveled against his former team. Host Petros Papadakis, a former USC football player, asked Carroll tough questions, including whether he knew about star player Reggie Bush's illegal dealings with an agent. During the course of the interview, Carroll also revealed that this was probably the last time that he would answer questions about the situation.
Below is a transcript of Carroll's response to Papadakis' question about Bush. To listen to the interview, click here.
Petros Papadakis: "When it comes to this whole thing and the way it all played out. and you always kind of when it came to the BCS too, you kind of said 'I don't really know what it is, or what it means,' you kind of ignored it, for lack of a better term, and just handled the week-in, week-out coaching of the football team. Now with the Reggie Bush thing, you have been questioning the NCAA and we heard those comments…"
Pete Carroll: "Well, that's a big question and they have a huge job and it's an extraordinary landscape to try and control and it's very, very difficult and so like other institutions, they make rules to try and help them govern and do a good job. I think just understanding the tenure of how this thing happened, and how it went, and knowing the amount of information they had, and I’m only referring to what the university knew and what they said they knew and what the NC-two A came down on. I can't really give you any hard facts about what happened with Reggie and his family and all that, but as far as the university, they don't have any concrete information that shows that anybody had any knowledge at all. You know, it's very sketchy at very best and that's what's so hard to take Petros - That after all that, the power and impact of their sanctions are based on the fact that the university knew what was going on and we didn't. So that's what's really so hard to take, especially with such a hard punishment coming down compared to other schools and other situations where money was being given and boosters where doing this and that, people were being induced into doing this and going to school and that's what this is not what this case is about. This is about one guy trying to make money off Reggie Bush and pursued it hard enough and got into it enough that they went after him in the media and it's a very difficult thing for me to see and it's the same as the other NCAA issues in the past."
